Mikko Koivu is a Minnesota Wild legend. He holds numerous franchise records including games played (1000), assists (497), points (700), Plus/Minus (+70), and currently sits 16 goals away from tying Marian Gaborik for the most goals in franchise history. He has been the heart and soul of this team for 15 years and he is STILL coming up big for his team.
Last Sunday's game against Dallas was Mikko's 1000th regular-season game in the NHL, becoming the 55th player in league history to play 1000 games with the same team. The Wild honored him before, during, and after the game on the broadcast and on the big screen on center ice. He got a standing ovation from the 17,000+ in attendance and by the whole bench of the Dallas Stars (classy). To celebrate Koivu picked up his 700th career point and scored a VINTAGE shootout goal.
Mikko is one of the most respected players in the league, and at age 36 he is still going strong. In 27 games this season he has picked up 12 points, including 6 points in the last 12 games. He is currently on the last year of his contract, but being able to watch him the past 15 years has been an amazing privilege and if this is his last year in a Wild jersey all I can say is THANK YOU!
