Series Recap: Gophers Hockey Get First Win in Three Weeks! What?!?!
The main story line coming out of this weekend is of course the Minnesota football team beating Penn State, but the Gophers hockey team was feeling some of that "Row the Boat" energy this weekend in Ann Arbor when they squared up with the Michigan Wolverines.
The Gophers took 5 of the 6 points this weekend, propelling to third place in the Big Ten standings and sitting only three points behind Notre Dame for first place.
Friday night's game resulted in another stupid "Bonus" point situation when Minnesota's Jaxon Nelson scored his first collegiate goal in double overtime even though it doesn't officially count. That is just so stupid! The kid scores an overtime goal, but the game still goes down as a 1-1 tie. All the goal does is give them an extra point! Still better than one point, I guess.
"Game Winning Goal"! Lol!
And then on Saturday night, for the first time in three weeks, the Gophers won a game. Yeah, I said that right! The last time the Minnesota men's hockey team won a game was on October 19 against Niagara. That's ridiculous! Sure we got some point "Bonus" points since then, but to not win a game for that long is pathetic. Hopefully Saturday's 3-1 win over the Wolverines can serve as a momentum shifter for this squad.
I mean this is the hockey team that represents the biggest University in the state for Pete's sake. Show some damn urgency! And they finally did that Saturday granite Michigan is trash! The Wolverines still have yet to win in conference play sitting at 0-3-1. But still, I give the Gophers credit for getting a win and coming out of the weekend at third place in the Big Ten.
I will say that I really like both goalies for this Gophers team. True freshman goaltender, Jared Moe had a career high game for saves on Saturday, stopping 38 of 39 shots. And Jack LaFontaine had a season-high 33 saves on Friday. Nice job young men!
Minnesota takes on Penn State next weekend to start a six-game homestead at Mariucci. The Nittany Lions are sitting at second place in the Big Ten so this could be a huge series for the Gophers.
I still hate that the Gophers are in the Big Ten for hockey by the way! WCHA for life!
Pride on Ice! Go Gophers! And what the hell, Row the Boat!
