I just don't understand what Wild GM Bill Guerin was thinking?! The Minnesota Wild were 7-3 in their last 10 games and were only THREE POINTS OUT OF A WILDCARD SPOT when Ol' Billy G decided to send Bruce out the door. According to Guerin, the coaching change was meant to inject the Wild with urgency... but didn't the Zucker trade days earlier already do that??
I understand that the firing came after a game where the Wild blew a late lead and then lost in overtime, but the team was playing great before then, the 7-3 record in their last 10 games proves that.
Fast forward to the very next game under new interim head coach Dean Evason and the Wild looked as bad as ever. They got shutout, at home, against a Sharks team that just played the night before, and are now 5 points out of a playoff spot. Yup, the Wild definitely received the message Bill...
If Bill Guerin would just be honest about the firing, I think a lot more of us would respect his decision. He didn't fire Boudreau to inject the Wild with urgency, he fired him because he wasn't Bill Guerin's choice, Guerin just "inherited" Boudreau from previous GM's. If he would have said something like "Here's the deal, Bruce is a great coach and he kept a bad team in the playoff race the whole season, but I don't care about playoffs I want to do this the right way with a coach who shares my vision of a long-term roster rebuild/overhaul" then I could have supported and respected his decision. But by saying that the coaching change was meant to inject the Wild with urgency is a BULLSHIT excuse. A team that's only 3 points from a playoff position and 7-3 in their last 10 games proves that they HAVE BEEN playing with plenty of urgency.
So to honor Bruce I would like to give a quick shout-out to the Minnesota Wild's social media team. They did an absolutely HORRIBLE job when introducing Bill Guerin as the new GM last summer. Just look at this absolutely horrible picture they choose for Billy.
I mean come on! This picture makes him look like Papa John when he ate 50 Pizzas in a fuckin' month...
I still like Guerin as a GM and I loved the return we got for the Zucker trade, but I absolutely HATE the timing and the reasoning for firing Bruce Boudreau when we were so close to a playoff spot.
This one's for you Bruce
